Choosing the Right Design for Your Perth Home
Your veranda, pergola or patio can be free standing to take advantage of a corner of your garden or yard, or it can be attached to the wall of your home. There are a wide range of design options available. Exactly what you choose will depend on many factors, such as what you want to use it for, when you want to use it, how much space you have available, what will suit your home, your schedule and your budget.
HJW Carpentry will help you with the design stage and assist with the council’s approval process if required. We build your chosen veranda, pergola or patio using the best quality materials and leave the site clean and tidy after we have finished.
Verandas and Patios
Verandas and patios have a solid roof and provide shade and protection from the elements. The roof can be made from timber, steel, plastic roof sheets, glass or tiles. We will advise you on the best option for your outdoor space.
The different styles of verandas and patios include:
- Hipped roof – with four sides sloping down like a pyramid, a hipped roof is one of the most enclosed options and gives you excellent protection from the elements.
- Gable roof – this design has two sloping sides coming down to your house’s wall. The high end of the roof allows plenty of light to flood in, but will also provide less shelter from wet or windy weather than other types of roofs will.
- Flat roof – for maximum space at minimum cost, a flat roof is ideal. The simple, smooth design won’t obstruct the view from any upstairs windows.
- Vaulted roof – this modern design provides additional height to allow you to fit fans or other accessories.
A timber pergola costs less to build and install than a veranda or patio because there is no solid roof, although you can opt for a shade cloth if you choose. Light can flood through the wooden battens, which make the perfect backdrop for Bougainvillea, vines or winding roses.
